Understanding Thoughts vs Feelings

Learning to distinguish between thoughts and feelings is a fundamental skill in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). This assessment will help you practice this important distinction.

Emotions (Feelings)

Emotions are single words that describe your emotional state:

  • Sad, angry, anxious
  • Joyful, excited, peaceful
  • Guilty, ashamed, lonely

Thoughts

Thoughts are statements or inner dialogue that go through our mind:

  • Predictions about the future
  • Interpretations of situations
